“Blanket cynicism gives the illusion of understanding.”

-Marcia Angell, Harvard Lecturer quoted in The New Republic

Crowd1

I ran across the above quote the other day, and it reminded me of a couple of things:

1.  Many great ideas never see the light of day because of cynical naysayers that always find ways to say “That will never work.”

2.  Group mentality often overcomes a single brilliant voice of innovation or questioning.

Just a quick reminder to myself and others to listen with an open mind…and stand up for ideas that may be different and are worthy of consideration and vetting, but that may change things for the better.

Obamacare2As most U.S. real estate agents are independent contractors, many will be scrambling to find good health care coverage.  This has always been an issue for REALTORS, but is even more problematic with the whole Affordable Care Act in force soon…

Realtor InsuranceThe National Association of Realtors has created its own insurance marketplace for its members.  I encourage you to check it out.  You will need to sign into your account on Realtor.org in order to see the details.  Here is the link: http://www.realtor.org/insurancemarketplace?cid=RHIM-August-0008

I was pretty impressed with the choices in my area.  Don’t procrastinate!

In addition, the NAR is offering a webinar on December 12, 2013 at 11am Central Standard Time.  The link to register for this is:  https://realtors.webex.com/realtors/onstage/g.php?d=921130646&t=a

Tonight in San Francisco, I was honored by RISMedia at the annual Power Broker Dinner when Publisher John Featherston presented me with his HomeOwnership Person of the Year Award.  I am humbled by being selected, and enjoyed seeing so many people in the audience that I have known for many years, and many that I have just gotten to know recently.  After 38 years in this industry it feels really gratifying to be recognized this way.

It was also great to see Steve Young (former San Francisco 49ers Quarterback) again…he was the keynote speaker tonight, and was thoroughly enjoyable.  I have had the honor of meeting him in the past at one of his Forever Young Golf Tournaments.

Regional Developers and Broker/Owners joining me from Realty Executives were Michael Neuman from Austin, K.M. Lock and NG Kim Poh from Malaysia, Nancy and Steve Summers from Kansas City, Don Perron from Louisiana, and Jeff Moore from Las Vegas, NV.  All in all a great night!

Execution Roadmap, Jim Alampi, Management, real estate brokerage, Strategic Planning

I recently finished reading Jim Alampi’s new book, Great To Excellent; It’s the Execution!  I have known Jim for a number of years as he has guided me and my management teams through what some people call “strategic planning.”  Jim calls it the “Execution Roadmap” because it is all about getting things done, rather than just planning to get things done.

JimAlampi

I particularly liked one brief chapter entitled “Your ‘Stop-Doing’ List is More Important than Any ‘To-Do’ List.”

Here is the entire chapter.  (I love how Jim is so concise!)

Members of senior management are notoriously poor at identifying things they should stop doing.  We typically keep adding more and more to our plates, requiring longer hours and more heroic efforts.  I don’t know about you, but when I hit 27-hour days, I lose a little productivity!

It is amazing what happens when we empower and encourage our employees to identify things they should stop doing.  You may not agree with all of them, but it’s amazing how many people spend time creating computer reports for people who stopped reading or needing them years ago!  Companies and employees usually have plenty of time to do the work required, if they would only stop doing things that were necessary once but are no longer needed or add value to the operation.

So my question for you is: “What can you STOP DOING in order to be more productive?”  Anyone care to share your answers?

House Music, real estate, Songs

This is one of my favorite songs of all time.  It is probably not one that many of you know, especially as a “House” song.  It is an instrumental by one of the best guitar players of all time.  It is “House Music” because of its title.  Very Mellow and haunting…

Are you enjoying this feature?  Let me know what you think.

Check this one out and let me know what you think.  Not familiar with this song or the artist, but the photo was a pretty funny fit with the words. I am still looking for more song suggestions.  Get creative and let me know what you come up with.  Enjoy!

Is Your Real Estate Website Optimized For Who Is Actually Searching For Homes?

This week our Phoenix Realty Executives company held an interesting Consumer Panel, in which we had three consumers of real estate tell our agents about their recent experiences in buying and selling homes.

The insights were valuable.  Hearing some ideas directly from our customers on how to improve the real estate buying and selling processes was enlightening.  One comment in particular stood out to me:

Do you REALLY know who is searching your website for homes???

One of our panelists has two daughters, ages 10 and 13.  He told us that right after the family decided to move, his girls were the main drivers of searching the internet for their new home!  When our family moved when I was around that age, I was NEVER involved in the home search or selection process.  How many of you have given any thought to optimizing or having your website appeal to teenagers?  I think there is a huge opportunity here!  It would be fascinating to me to do some market research and focus groups with teenagers of families that have recently moved or are considering it, to understand how best we could include them in the process on our websites.

Do you have any suggestions of what might be compelling?  How about some information about restaurants, coffee houses, music and concert venues?  Perhaps a calendar of upcoming concerts and other events that appeal to that age group?  I am sure you can add some more to the list.

More House Music…

Family, real estate

Summer is generally a busy real estate time, as many families want to get moved into their new homes prior to school starting…

Real estate people have families, too, and deserve to have vacations.  So, how do you balance this busy time with your family vacation?

Do you defer the timing of your vacation to a less busy time?  Or are you the guy on vacation at the beach standing in the surf, on his cell phone while his kids are trying to get his attention to play?  Perhaps you have a partner in the business that covers for you, and vice-versa.

I would like to hear from you how you balance your family vacation with your work…Talk to me.  What’s your solution?
